چکیده

Given a set C of binary n-tuples and c ∈ C, how many bits of c suffice to distinguish it from the other elements in C ? We shed new light on this old combinatorial problem and improve on previously known bounds.

Numerically intersecting algebraic varieties via witness sets

The fundamental construct of numerical algebraic geometry is the representation of an irreducible algebraic set, A, by a witness set, which consists of a polynomial system, F , for which A is an irreducible component of V(F ), a generic linear space L of complementary dimension to A, and a numerical approximation to the set of witness points, L ∩A. Given F , methods exist for computing a numeri...

Pragmatic identification of the witness sets

Among the readings available for NL sentences, those where two or more sets of entities are independent of one another are particularly challenging from both a theoretical and an empirical point of view. Those readings are termed here as ‘Independent Set (IS) readings’. Standard examples of such readings are the well-known Collective and Cumulative Readings. (Robaldo, 2011) proposes a logical f...

On the Identification of Quantifiers' Witness Sets: A Study of Multi-quantifier Sentences

Natural language sentences that talk about two or more sets of entities can be assigned various readings. The ones in which the sets are independent of one another are particularly challenging from the formal point of view. In this paper we will call them ‘Independent Set (IS) readings’. Cumulative and collective readings are paradigmatic examples of IS readings. Most approaches aiming at repre...

Simplicial Multivalued Maps and the Witness Complex for Dynamical Analysis of Time Series

Topology-based analysis of time-series data from dynamical systems is powerful: it potentially allows for computer-based proofs of the existence of various classes of regular and chaotic invariant sets for high-dimensional dynamics. Standard methods are based on a cubical discretization of the dynamics and use the time series to construct an outer approximation of the underlying dynamical syste...

Witness sets of projections

Elimination is a basic algebraic operation which geometrically corresponds to projections. This article describes using the numerical algebraic geometric concept of witness sets to compute the projection of an algebraic set. The ideas described in this article apply to computing the image of an algebraic set under any linear map.

In numerical algebraic geometry witness sets are numerical representations of positive dimensional solution sets of polynomial systems. Considering the asymptotics of witness sets we propose certificates for algebraic curves. These certificates are the leading terms of a Puiseux series expansion of the curve starting at infinity. The vector of powers of the first term in the series is a tropism...
